The optician Jean-Gabriel Augustin Chevallier (1778-1848) established a business at 1 Quai de l’Horloge, on the Île de la Cité opposite the flower market in Paris in 1796, selling lenses, microscopes, barometers and other optical and scientific instruments. In 1842 he sold the business to his son-in-law and daughter, Alexandre-Victor Ducray and Marie-Louise Melanie Chevallier, and the shop was transferred to 15 Place du Pont-Neuf, where it continued to trade for much of the 19th century.
