Description
A Tiffany pill box in the shape of a frog, French
circa 1970
matted surface, the frog opening its gargantuan mouth opening to reveal a pill compartment, inscribed: Tiffany, & Co., France, in a black velvet-lined case stamped for Tiffany&Co.
3.8cm., 1 1/2 in. wide
According to family tradition, this frog-shaped pill box was commissioned for guests at a dinner party held by Sadruddin Aga Khan (1933-2003) in Paris.
Whimsical animals inspired by fairytales, such as the Frog Prince, were designed by goldsmiths like Donald Claflin for Tiffany & Co. in the 1970s. While the American luxury retailer, founded in 1837 by the jeweler Charles Lewis Tiffany and arguably most famous since the early 20th century, mostly focused on gem-set models of animals in that period, it is possible that the designs for jewelled frog brooches etc were used as an inspiration for special commissions as well.
