The ornaments are in good overall condition with just typical encrustation. One loop of one cheek piece is broken on the reverse as visible in the catalogue photo.

Two pairs of similar Western Zhou bronze cheek pieces discovered in Fufeng, Shaanxi, are now preserved in Shaanxi Provincial Zhouyan Museum and included in Imperial China: The Art of the Horse in Chinese History, International Museum of the Horse, Lexington, Kentucky, Prospect, 2000, cat. no. 38. The author explains that a pair of cheek ornaments would have been attached with a central mouthpiece (p. 88).


陝西扶風出土兩對相類之西周青銅馬面飾,現存陝西周原博物館,圖見《帝王時代中國:馬》,肯塔基馬園及國際馬博物館,肯塔基,2000年,編號38,書中寫道,成對馬鑣,用來連接及固定勒在馬口之馬銜,藉此約束馬匹(頁88)。
