A collection of domestic linen, including Glengall family, damask table cloth and napkins, and other domestic table, hand and kitchen cloths, plate and glass mats

Ireland, 19th-20th century


Including a linen damask tablecloth, woven with ‘Glengall family’ coat-of-arms, second half 19th century, woven with six crests across the field, with Ducal coronet with ostrich feathers, falcon and motto ‘God be my guide’, the corners with roses and acanthus, and outer border with repeat running pattern of Tudor rose, shamrock and thistle motifs (approx. 452cm by 230cm; 14ft 8in by 7ft 5in); overall very good condition, with original selvedges, a few minor marks and a dark surface mark.


together with a set of twelve matching ‘Glengall family’ fine linen damask napkins, Ireland, second half 19th century, of same design, with family coat-of-arms (one 74cm by 56cm; 2ft 4in by 1ft 8in and others varying in size between 55cm by 30cm and 55cm by 37cm); one complete, others reduced horizontal format, design with coat of arms and band of top and bottom border (not side borders), turned selvedges, excellent condition, although reduced sizes, bundle tied with green ribbon. An embroidered linen damask table cloth, Ireland, first half 20th century, square format, woven linen, hand embroidered in cross stitch in shades of golden brown and yellow, with brown embroidered horizontal lines defining border width and crossing over in corners, the centre field with bands of floral swags and scallop edging, echoed in the centre of each outer edge, and the corners with small facing foliate motifs (approx. 175cm by 133cm; 5ft 7in by 4ft 3in), together with six matching napkins (approx. 38cm by 38cm); excellent condition (7)


TABLE CLOTHS

1) Two embroidered and cut work linen tablecloths, Ireland, first half 20th century, square format, woven linen, central square with pulled work definition of two banded border, with overall hand embroidered white work swags of flowers and foliage and sprinkling of groups of three leaf clover, with brown work ‘Munro Ross’ on edge (each approx. 262cm by 178cm; 8ft 5in by 5ft 8in); excellent condition (2)


2) A small linen table cloth, Ireland, first half 20th century, square format, heavy weight, woven linen, centred with stylised geometric motif (approx. 127cm by 122cm; 4ft 1in by 4ft); excellent condition (1)


3) A small embroidered and pulled work linen table cloth, Ireland, 20th century, square format, woven linen, finely hand embroidered in cross stitch, in shades of green and orange, with stylised baskets of flowers and foliage, within a central grid of pulled work worked with floral design, blue blanket stitched outer edges (approx. 134cm by 129cm; 4ft 3in by 4ft 2in); excellent condition (1)


4) A small cut work and lace inset linen table cloth, Ireland, 20th century, square format, worked with a central roundel of circular motifs, and four outer inset shaped lace insets with baskets of flowers, the outer border with inset triangular repeat pattern insets, and smaller lozenges on the centre of each side (approx. 138cm by 138cm; 4ft 5in by 4ft 5in); excellent condition (1)


NAPKINS

1) A set of fourteen linen damask napkins, Ireland, first half 20th century, square format, two-tone, woven with central dark circular band with lighter water lily design, the border with similar motifs against darker band, with embroidered red work laundry mark initials ‘L.G.’ (approx. 68cm by 68cm; 2ft 2in by 2ft 2in); very good overall condition, bundle tied with green ribbon (14)

2) A set of nine linen damask napkins, Ireland, first half 20th century, square format, woven with circular arabesque motif and ‘c’-scroll and foliate motifs in each corner (approx. 55cm by 54cm; 1ft 8in by 1ft 7in); overall excellent condition, one with minor rust mark, bundle tied with green ribbon (9)

3) A set of eight linen damask napkins, Ireland, first half 20th century, square format, woven with four facing small arabesques and scrolls, with border with repeat vine leaf motif and beaded inner edging (approx. 56cm by 55cm; 1ft. 8in by 1ft 8in); in overall good condition, bundle tied with green ribbon (8)

4) A set of five linen damask napkins, Ireland, first half 20th century, square format, woven with central dark circular band, with lighter with acanthus leaf design, with a deep border of scrolling acanthus leaves, outer narrow scrolling foliate band and additional small shamrock motif in each corner (approx. 72cm by 70cm; 2ft 3in by 2ft 2in); very good overall condition, bundle tied with green ribbon (5)

1) A set of eight linen damask hand cloths, Ireland, first half 20th century, horizontal format, ecru cream colour, woven with a scallop edged cartouche design with plain field, the ends with floral swags, with embroidered red work laundry mark initials ‘M. L. G. 36, with additional blue printed inscription ‘Old Bleach made in Ireland’, (approx. 102cm by 60cm; 3ft 3in by 1ft 9in); in excellent condition, some minor rust discolouration, bundle tied with green ribbon (8)


2) A set of six linen damask hand cloths, Ireland, first half 20th century, horizontal format, woven with striped field and decorative ends with band of lattice with foliate motifs, edged with beading, horizontal line of pulled work definition to inner edge of upper and lower selvedges (approx. 90cm by 50cm; 2ft 9in by 1ft 6in); in overall very good condition, bundle tied with blue ribbon (6)


3) A set of six linen damask hand cloths, Ireland, first half 20th century, horizontal format, woven with blind field and decorative ends with three groups of geranium motif, horizontal line of pulled work definition to inner edge of upper and lower selvedges (approx. 95cm by 47cm; 3ft 1in by 1ft 5in); in overall good condition, with some minor stains, bundle tied with blue ribbon (6)


4) A set of five linen hand cloths, Ireland, first half 20th century, large horizontal format, with blind field and

decorative ends with running band of oak leaves and laurel motif in the corners, with embroidered red work laundry mark initials ‘LG 36’, and paper label, ‘Old Bleach made in Ireland’, horizontal line of pulled work definition to inner edge of upper and lower selvedges (approx. 110cm by 70cm; 3ft 6in by 2ft 2in); some dirt on the edges, bundle tied with green ribbon (5)

1) A set of four linen damask kitchen cloths, Ireland, 20th century, large horizontal format, white blind field and azure blue decorative ends with running band of scrollwork, with embroidered red work laundry mark initials ‘LG’, horizontal line of pulled work definition to inner edge of upper and lower selvedges (approx. 96cm by 56cm; 3ft 1in by 1ft 8in); one with large brown mark, others with spot marks, otherwise very good condition, bundle tied with white ribbon (4)


2) A matching set of four linen damask kitchen cloths, Ireland, 20th century, large horizontal format, white blind field and azure blue decorative ends with running band of scrollwork, no laundry initials, horizontal line of pulled work definition to inner edge of upper and lower selvedges (approx. 96cm by 56cm; 3ft 1in by 1ft 8in); brand new, never used, excellent condition, bundle tied with white ribbon (4)


3) A set of four linen damask kitchen cloths, Ireland, 20th century, large horizontal format, white blind field and azure blue banded edging, and blue reserve through centre of the length, with white clover and bell motif and inscription ‘Kitchen Cloth. Irish Linen. Super Quality’, purchased Harvey Nichols, London (approx. 85cm by 65cm; 3ft 1in by 1ft 8in); brand new, never used, excellent condition (4)

[Part lot] Probably acquired by Ambrose Edmund Butler (1848-1923);
thence by descent to the late Edmund Butler Esq, of Kirkstall Forge, Yorkshire.

The arms featured on the table linen are those of the Earls of Glengall, created 22 January 1816, for Richard Butler, 10th Baron Cahir, by The Prince Regent (acting on behalf of his father King George III). Earldom extinct 22 June 1858. The family seat was Cahir Castle and House, County Tipperary, Ireland. The Butlers left Ireland for England in 1688.
