Manfred A. Bertram writing in Twentieth-Century Crime and Mystery Writers (London, 1980) states "There are three aspects of Ngaio Marsh's work which stand out: the theatrical flavour, her detective and the characterisations. It is probably because of these three that her detective fiction has been popular for so long."
