As explained by the preface, the volume was conceived as a "murder story... written by six different authors, each author to contribute a separate chapter... As each author completed a chapter the growing manuscript was handed on to the next man or woman..." The contributors were Dorothy L. Sayers, Freeman Wills Crofts, Valentine Williams, F. Tennyson Jesse, Anthony Armstrong and David Hume.
