"Monnaie-du-Pape" Armoire

circa 1900

walnut, wrought iron

68 1/2 x 38 1/2 x 18 in. (174 x 97.8 x 45.7 cm)

Overall in very good condition. The wooden surfaces appear to have been sensitively refinished at some point in the history of the piece to revitalize the rich quality of the mahogany. The mahogany presents with scattered surface scratches, minute abrasions, indentations and small nicks particularly concentrated to the edges as consistent with gentle use. The mahogany presents with occasional areas of sensitive restoration and inpainting, not visually distracting. The proper right door presents with a small area of concentrated craquelure to the finish, which appears slightly darker compared to the rest of the wood. The reverse of the armoire presents with a fine separation to the wood grain, stable. The top of the armoire presents with a faint ring stain to the center, not visually distracting. The interior is fitted with one fixed shelf and five drawers. The drawers present with light surface soiling, discolorations and staining. The iron mounts are in very well-preserved condition with wear, traces of oxidation and surface soiling concentrated to the recessed areas of the design and consistent with age. Together with a period key.
