In an interview with arts critic Richard B. Woodward, David Levinthal commented: 'I was born in 1949 and I'm part of that generation that grew up with television as more than just a novelty. It was omnipresent. . . I think my "Wild West" series reflects the pervasiveness of the Western myth during that time on television. . . It was from Saturday afternoon television. During the '50s, half of the top-rated shows were Westerns. They still had serials in those days. Or look at the toys in Sears catalogs from the '50s, with page after page of holster sets –Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, and the generic ones. The television culture was very important to me' (quoted in David Levinthal: Work from 1975-1996, p. 106).
