Description

Murray, James

An Impartial History of the Present War In America; containing an Account of its Rise and Progress, the Political Springs thereof, with its various Successes and Disappointments on Both Sides. Newcastle upon Tyne: Printed for T. Robson: London: R. Baldwin; York: N. Frobisher; Edinburgh: C. Elliot; Glasgow: Dunlop & Wilson, [1778–1780]

2 volumes, 8vo (210 x 127 mm). 23 engraved portraits including frontispieces of George III and George Washington, folding plan of Boston; occasional toning to text, some light offsetting of plates to text, short marginal tear to portrait of General Henry Clinton in vol. 1. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards; sympathetically rebacked in calf, boards scuffed, extremities rubbed.

The portraits depict many of the important military, naval, and political figures who figured prominently during the War for Independence (although those of the Americans are less than flattering likenesses).
