Robert Walpole, Ambassador to Paris


Two documents:


i) Document signed, appointing John Larpent his attorney to receive funds from the exchequer on his account, with two witness signatures, 1 page, folio, integral blank with contemporary docketing, red wax seal impression, 21 April 1769


ii) Document signed, asking for payment of "His Extra-Extraordinary Disbursements", ("...For His Expences in House-hire and removing to Compeigne and Fontainbleu to attend the Court at those Places. £200..."), and signed on receipt in London as allowable expenses, by the Earl of Rochford ("...I allow this Bill by His Majesty's special Command..."), 1 page, folio, red wax seal impression, 1 February 1771, (receipt dated 14 March 1771)


The Honourable Robert Walpole was the younger son of Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Walpole of Wolterton and nephew of Sir Robert Walpole, the first British Prime Minister. He married twice and had ten children; two from the first marriage and eight from the second marriage.


Robert Walpole was "His Majesty's Minister Plenipotentiary to the Most Christian King" [Louis XV] from August 1768 to November 1770. The Earl of Rochford (1717-1781) was Secretary of State (1768-1775).
