China—Tuck Tai
Panorama of Shanghai Bund, c.1895
Panoramic view (200 x 2220mm.) of the Bund, Shanghai, made up from 8 albumen photographs, contemporary black half morocco concertina album, red morocco label to upper cover, lightly faded
This eight-part panorama by Tuck Tai shows a view from the Native City (Nanshi) in the far left of the photograph to Suzhou Creek in the far right. The panorama centres on what was the British settlement. Notable buildings are the Shanghai Club (in the centre of section three), with its columns and pediment; the Customs House (in the centre of section four), and the spire of Trinity Cathedral which can be seen to its right in the background. The Customs House is between two big banks; the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank to its left and the Deutsch-Asiaatische Bank to its right. In section six, the North Bank shows the big white building of the German consulate, with the Japanese consulate to its right. Crossing Garden Bridge, one can see at the far left of the print the British consulate next to the public gardens and bandstand.
