A RARE EARLY VIEW OF KABUL, taken from one of the city's surrounding hills, and showing the Khyber Pass in the background.

John Burke and William Baker, two British soldiers, were among the first photographers to work in Afghanistan; from their base in northern India they worked together during the 1860s and early 1870s and took photographs during the Afghan wars, and in Peshawar and the Himalayas. Many of their photographs were used as the source for illustrations in the Illustrated London News and other publications.

Good tonal range and in good condition.
