Danish writer and collector Carl Kjersmeier and his wife, Amalie, amassed a large collection of African cultural artifacts beginning in 1918. Their home in Copenhagen became a gallery devoted to the display of these objects. They welcomed visitors from all over the world to see their collection and to participate in lively discussions on artistic and intellectual subjects.  According to scholar Wendy Grossman, Man Ray and a Danish photographer named Vagn Guldbrandsen were commissioned by Kjersmeier to photograph his collection. Photographs taken by Man Ray included in the four-volume set of books chronicling Kjersmeier's collection  were originally misattributed to Guldbrandsen.  The photographs he took of the sculptures carefully and skillfully use lighting effects to create shadows, heightening the drama of the composition.
