El Capitan, Yosemite

mammoth-plate albumen print, mounted, annotated 'Capitan, 3600 ft.' in pencil on the mount, framed, 1878-81

image: 21 by 15 in. (53.3 by 38.1 cm.)

frame: 30 ¾ by 24 ¾ in. (78.1 by 62.9 cm.)

Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 representing the darkest, deepest albumen print with crisp bright highlights, this print is an 8. The dark tones are more coffee brown, rather than eggplant, and remain quite saturated in the central portion of the image. The highlights are creamy, without yellowing, but the midtones may be somewhat thin. There is very good detail seen in the trees in the foreground and the dramatic rockface in the middle ground. There is edge-fading and yellowing along the lower and right sides, extending no more than 3/4-inch into the image. This photograph is in generally very good condition. Scattered hairline scratches and impressions and a few creases, possibly from the mounting process, are visible when the print is examined in raking light. The lower right corner of the print is lifting from the mount. The mount is worn, soiled, and the edges are age-darkened. There are small losses at the upper right corner, lower right corner, and the lower edge. The reverse is soiled and age-darkened at the edges.
