Constantin Brancusi, Voulangis, France

gelatin silver print, annotated 'Brancusi' and with credit, title, date, and numerical notations in pencil on the reverse, framed, circa 1922, probably printed before 1950

image: 13 ¾ by 10 ¾ in. (34.9 by 27.3 cm.)

frame: 18 ½ by 15 ½ in. (47 by 39.4 cm.)

Please note the colors and shades in the online catalogue illustration may vary depending on screen settings. This print, on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. The following are visible: 2 soft handling creases in the areas of the sitter's forehead and under the right side of the beard; and faint silvering in the darkest areas of the collar. There are tack holes in the lower left margin corner. The upper left and right margin corners are worn. The faint white circular area under the sitter's eye appears to be a flaw on the negative and is not a feature of the present print. In addition to numerical notations on the reverse, the following are written in pencil in unidentified hands: '(Steichen's handwriting) / in Steichen's Garden at Voulangis / c. 1922'; '16'; '1/15; 'Brancusi'; and indecipherable notations. There is a small fox mark in the lower right corner and brown discoloration in the lower left corner. The edges are somewhat age-darkened. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
