A celadon-glazed handled jar,

Eastern Zhou dynasty, Warring States period

東周 戰國 青釉雙繫罐

h. 19.5 cm; w. 29 cm

A comparable jar, formerly in the collection of Fritz Löw-Beer (1906-1976), is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/42331), illustrated in Suzanne G. Valenstein, A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1989, pl. 30.

See also two other excavated examples; one came from the first type of tombs cleared in 1955 in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, illustrated in Kaogu Xuebao, Beijing, 1957, no. 1, pp. 133-140, pl. 3:1. These tombs have been attributed to the Warring States period. The other came from cliff tombs found in 1978 in Guixi, Jiangxi province, illustrated in Wenwu, Beijing, 1980, no. 11, pp. 1-25, figs 13:19, 14:25. These tombs have been dated from one carbon-14 sample to the late Spring and Autumn - early Warring States period.

Another related Warring States handled jar, decorated with a rope-twist pattern, was sold recently in our New York rooms, 28th September 2021, lot 724
