This print may have been made in advance of the exhibition Steichen the Photographer, presented at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1961; its dimensions are comparable to the print exhibited. Steichen served as Director of the Department of Photography at MoMA from 1947 to 1962. Grace Mayer, from whom this photograph originally came, assisted Steichen during his last few years at the museum and was subsequently promoted to curator after his retirement.
