Some consider independent watch brand Cecil Purnell to be a hidden gem in the world of watchmaking. Indeed it is a name that is not often in the conversation when it comes to high end independents. However, those who are well versed about horology will undoubtedly recognise Purnell as one of the premier tourbillon specialists in the industry. From the very first model, every single watch produced by the brand has contained a tourbillon. Since being founded in 2006, the brand has created an astonishing 13 proprietary tourbillon calibers, though the brand is estimated to only have created around 1,000 watches in total making it an extremely exclusive company, with an output of around 50 pieces per year.
The present watch belongs to the Spherion collection, which contains an exceptionally impressive and technical triple axis tourbillon, capable of rotating 360 degrees. Only a few watch companies are able to produce a tourbillon capable of rotating 360 degrees, but Cecil Purnell did not stop there. Teaming up with Eric Coudray, one of the biggest names in the world of Tourbillons and the architect behind the world’s first 360 degree tourbillon during his time at Jaeger-LeCoultre, these two masters of the tourbillon created the fastest rotating triple axis tourbillon in the world, creating one full rotation in an unprecedented 8 seconds.
This watch is so difficult to manufacture, making it a rare and exclusive treasure. Furthermore, due to the lengthy production process, customers are able to select the colour of the tourbillon cage and dial detailing, effectively making each spherion a possibly unique piece. When it comes to tourbillons, collectors should look no further than this Cecil Purnell masterpiece.
