Description

woven in two parts, joined vertically through the centre, comprising large composite palmettes with a central stylised tulip between ogival lattice joined by a crown and a stylised rosette, tulip motifs, on a dark red velvet ground, with later fringe

149 by 124cm.

Ex-collection Edgar Vincent, 1st Viscount d’Abernon (1857-1941) and his wife, Lady d'Abernon, thence by descent.
The design of this velvet is on a magnificent scale, the bold drawing and the contrast between the crimson silk and the metal thread used to splendid and dramatic effect. The ‘Crown of St. Stephen’, which can be seen at the centre of this panel holding two ogival trellises which springs between it is a motif influenced by European textiles. The composite palmettes on the other hand ingeniously incorporate a more typically Turkish repertoire of stylised tulips and carnation blooms. A velvet of similar design is in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, Istanbul, inv. no.11640-D.132, see H. Bilgi, Catma & Kemha: Ottoman Silk Textiles, Sadberk Hanim Museum, Istanbul, 2007, pp.66-67, no.21.
