The present work is a preparatory sketch for the left figure on Foujita's famous painting Cinq Nus (fig. 1), originally presented at the 1923 Salon d'Automne in Paris and now preserved in the National Museum of Art in Tokyo.

Cinq nus is often depicted as Foujita hommage to Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon from 1907, and Matisse La Danse, 1909-1910, two iconic masterpieces which will eventually inspire generations of Asian artists working in Paris.
