Rosa Barba created San Antonio Tracks as a part of her Artpace exhibition New Works. Barba’s interest in where societies mingle with materials like land gave birth to the series. “I see them as documents left by society,” said Barba, “The land has its specific history and manifestation, and these inscriptions meld together.” The series is part of an ongoing project that began in Marfa when the artist noticed the marks each train left on the rail. Barba used tracing paper to make rubbings of the rail and intends to do the same all over the United States, creating “another kind of archive” where society and material interact.
