Gift of the Artist

Christian Marclay’s artistic practice includes an exploration of sound and transforming it into a visible, physical form through various mediums. One of his ongoing projects, Snapshots, depicts elements of sound the artist encounters in his everyday life. While in residency at Artpace San Antonio in Texas, Marclay photographed a shutdown record store and collage of records as part of this series. Like many of his other works, the photographs are a meditation and visual depiction of sound. Through the photographs, the viewer may imagine the sounds that might have occurred while the photo was taken, such as a busy street or a busy bar. Or the viewer may imagine the sounds that would have come from within the record store or the music on each record on display in the collage. The small indicators in the photos elicit a creative imagining of the possibilities of sound.
