A rare hexagonal‎ archaistic bronze jardinière

Qing dynasty, 17th-18th century, Ming Shan Tang mark


with a bulbous body and a flat everted hexagonal rim, supported on six ruyi feet, cast around the exterior with shaped panels enclosing confronted archaistic phoenix and angular scrolls at each end, the base cast with a four character Ming Shan Tang zhi mark

The mark on the base may refer to the Ming Shan Tang (lit. Hall of clear goodness) in Suzhou, located in the scenic area of Dongshan near the Taihu Lake, built during the Ming dynasty and used as an official building until the late Qing dynasty and later designated as a Heritage site during the 20th century.
