Description

Scappi, Bartolomeo

Opera di M. Bartolomeo Scappi, cuoco secreto di Papa Pio V. (Venice: Michele Tramezzino, 1570)

4to (204 x 150mm.), woodcut device on title-page, engraved portrait of the author, 27 engraved plates (one double-page depicting the conclave), some pasted back to back, blank leaf and a printed leaf with a description of the plates bound before the plates, modern vellum, occasional light staining, small repair to centre of double-page plate

This is the second edition of Scappi's comprehensive collection of recipes; the first edition also appeared in 1570, but was printed without a colophon. The plates depict kitchens in full use and various pieces of kitchen equipment, from knives to cooking pots, together with a double-page plate of a feast during the Conclave that ran from the end of November 1549 to February 1550 and finally elected Julius III.
