Description

Dardano, Luigi

La bella e dotta difesa delle donne in verso, e prose... contra gli accusatori del sesso loro. Venice: (Bartolomeo Imperatore), 1554

8vo (153 x 102mm.), woodcut portrait of the author on title-page (repeated on final verso), text in italics, woodcut initials, with blank leaf t8, contemporary limp vellum, title lettered along foot of textblock, blank upper corner of t7-8 cut away, binding slightly worn

Published by Dardano's grandson Ippolito, this is a defence of women judged unfairly by history. The bulk of the text comprises retrials of these women by a male lawyer giving the male opinion, a female one giving the opposite opinion, and three judges. The first defendant is, appropriately, Eve.
