Frederic Church traveled throughout Europe between 1867 and 1869. This time abroad inspired him to paint many subjects in the area, particularly the remnants and ruins of former civilizations he encountered in places near the Mediterranean. The present work depicts the artist's view of a Roman aqueduct in Tivoli. The large cloud formation at the left is a motif that the artist experimented with during the early 1870s and is similarly depicted in his 1872 work, Clouds Over Olana in the Olana State Historic Site's collection.
