Castor and Pollux saving Helen

oil on canvas

unframed: 113.3 x 145.3 cm.; 44 7/8 x 57 1/2 in.

framed: 123.3 x 156 cm.; 48 7/8 x 61 7/8 in.

The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is clean with a very slightly discoloured and thick varnish. The network of craquelure has become slightly more distinct in areas, such as the upper right quadrant. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick varnish underneath which some retouching is made visible: spots in the dark pigments between the figures to reduce the appearance of craquelure; in the central male figure's cheek and thighs; to three repaired damages - two lower right and one upper right, the largest measuring 20 x 10cm.; more concentrated spots in the right edge of the cloak of the far right male figure; wash retouching in the hair of the two left-most female figures; and a few additional scattered spots. These have all been sensitively executed and do not impede the legibility of the image, which presents well and is ready to hang.
