Description

A pair of French gilt-bronze figural candlesticks, after the model by Corneille Van Clevé 19th century

of large size, each stem in the form of a classical male and female supporting a child

42cm. high, 1ft. 4½in.

For comparison see a pair of candlesticks of this form and size in the Wallace Collection, London (for a discussion on this pair in the Wallace see P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Furniture II, London, 1996, figs. 30-31, nos. 232-233).

The drawings for the design (originally attributed to Le Brun are now thought to be by Clevé himself). These designs were first executed by Clevé's brother-in-law, the goldmsith Nicolas de Launay in 1702 in silver-gilt.
