Bramer was a prolific draughtsman, making many series of drawings illustrating stories from the bible, as well as copies after notable works that he encountered both in Rome and in the collections of his native Holland.
Large, free studies of single figures like this one are, however, much rarer within his work, and this is a particularly attractive and stylish example of a drawing by Bramer of this type.
