pen and ink on paper, framed, sketched on both sides of the paper. The shorthand is translated by Geoffrey W. Bonsall, Director of Hong Kong University Press and expert on Chinnery shorthand: "The string ought to be drawn quite tight. The machine ought to be rather nearer to the woman."
