Relief Sculpture

1935

stone

incised Clément Rousseau and dated 1935

15 ¾ x 11 ⅛ x 2 ⅜ in. (40 x 28.4 x 6 cm)

Overall in very good condition. The stone presents with surface irregularities and uneven free edges inherent to the medium and its carving. The stone throughout presents with scattered surface scratches and light scuffing consistent with age and gentle handling. The sides of the stone present with a few more pronounced abrasions, the largest measuring approximately ⅝ in. long and not visually distracting. The reverse of the sculpture is applied with remnants of an old paper label and presents with traces of incised writing. Light surface soiling concentrated to the recessed areas of the design.

An unusual work by Clément Rousseau, departing from the shagreen furniture for which he is most often associated during this period, this relief sculpture marks a periodic return to classical sculpture for the artist. Originally trained as a sculptor by Léon Morice at the École des Beaux-Arts of Angers, Rousseau pays homage through the present lot to the provincial French city where he studied. This finely executed piece indeed depicts what appears to be the castle and cathedral of Angers in the background together with a young lady at the forefront wearing a traditional hairdo from the region. Little to no information is known about this piece which brings to light Rousseau's multifaceted talents and incredibly prolific practice.
