white marble

44.5cm., 17½in.

Sotheby's London, 13 November 2007, lot 64
The present marble is typical of Gayrard's sweetly neo-classicising forms. One of a series of children depicting the season, this Winter huddles his small shoulders into a vast furry hide. The details are charmingly observed with the broken ice at his feet and the biting wind ruffling his curls and blowing open his cosy cloak. Son of the sculptor and medallist Raymond Gayrard, Paul-Joseph-Raymond was a pupil of both Rude and David d'Angers. He had his Salon début in 1827 with a group of busts.
