Born in Huddersfield, England, Kitson studied at the Academy of Saint Luke in Rome under Todesti and Ignazio Jacometti before moving to the United States where he settled in 1878. In New York he became William K. Vanderbilt's principal sculptor for his residence there. His American oeuvre includes the Sheridan Monument in Arlington, the north frieze commemorating sailors and soldiers on the Harlford Triumphal Arch, and a bust of the governor Greenhalge in the State House, Boston. Prior to his move to America, Kitson sent three works from Rome to the Royal Academy Summer exhibitions in London.
