REFERENCE 6263 DAYTONA 'SIGMA DIAL'
A STAINLESS STEEL CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH BRACELET, CIRCA 1974
Caliber: cal. 727 mechanical, 17 jewels
Case: stainless steel, screw-down case back
Case number: 3'986'380, inside case back 6265
Closure: stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet with folding clasp
Dimensions: 38 mm diameter, bracelet circumference approximately 155 mm
Signed: case, dial and movement
Case: The case is in overall good condition with some minor scratching visible throughout consistent with the age of the timepiece, and due to wear. The bottom right lug has a dent but the rest retain good proportions. The service bezel has wear throughout and with discoloration to the numbers 140 and 150.
Dial: The dial is in overall good condition. Previous relume in our view. There is dirt present on the luminous hour markers at 6, 7, and 9 o'clock positions. There is a minor divot to the dial above the signed area. The watch has likely seen some restoration, most visible on the Sigma's flanking the T-SWISS-T.
Movement: Chronograph operating. The movement is running at the time of cataloging, however it was not tested for accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.

Presented in 1971 and available until 1986, the Rolex reference 6263 is one of the most popular, reliable and iconic watches of the last century. Due to this elongated production period, multiple case and dial variations exist, including steel, 14k, and 18k gold cases, and dial configurations including exotic, big red, and sigma variants. The current 6263 contains a rare "Sigma Dial" with two lower case Greek Sigma letters bracketing the "T Swiss T" at six o'clock. The Sigma designation was used by Rolex and a number of other brands throughout the 1970’s to signify that the applied hour markers were constructed from gold, in this case 18k white gold.
The present watch maintains its status as a highly attractive and handsome piece for daily use and is in good condition.
