A RUSSIAN SILVER-GILT-MOUNTED COCONUT CUP AND COVER WITH PORTRAITS OF THE CZARS

the nut carved with profiles busts of probably Peter, Catherine I, and Elizabeth, each in rococo cartouche surrounded by military emblems and flags, the foot chased with rococo cartouches, the rim and the straps engraved with scrolling foliage in 17th century style, tree-trunk stem, the cover carved with three Imperials crowns, the finial formed as the Imperial double Eagle, pricked Cyrillic initials underneath; apparently unmarked, except for a French swan control introduced in 1893

A similarly carved coconut cup with 17th century-style stem is in the Marjorie Merriweather Post collection at Hillwood, no. 12.27.1-2; it has a presentation inscription for 1760.
