Anonymous sale, Paris, Hotel Drouot, 6 December 1935, lots 12 and 13
The present pair of elegant interior scenes brimming with musicians and singers were painted by Louis Choquet, a French painter, draughtsman, and miniaturist who studied under Aubry and was active from the end of the 18th until the early 19th centuries, exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1808 - 1824.  Very few works are known by this rare artist.  In addition to the present pair, two other works by Choquet titled The Prayer and The Vigil and notably more solemn in content, titled The Prayer and The Vigil, were offered in the same 1935 sale.  Three of his illustrations for a children's book are today in the Morgan Library and Museum, New York (inv. nos. 1964.26.1-3).
