Amery. The... Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. 1928

PALESTINE ̶ AMERY, LEOPOLD CHARLES MAURICE STENNETT

The Western or Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Memorandum by the Secretary of State for the Colonies. London: HMSO, 1928

8vo (235 x 150mm.), disbound, inkstamp on final blank (same stamp removed from title)

This rare memorandum was issued in November 1928 following perceived Jewish attempts to wrest the Western or Wailing Wall from Muslim control. The British were committed to preserving the status quo, which had arguably been infringed by Jewish worshippers bringing tables and benches to the wall, and attaching a screen to the wall and pavement to divide male and female congregants.
