The workshop of Alfred Langlois supplied some of the major Parisian jewellery houses of the early 20th century, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Lacloche Frères. Among their specialisms were beautifully designed compacts and cigarette cases, as with the present lot. From 1932, however, Alfred Langlois was contracted exclusively with Van Cleef & Arpels, for whom they were instrumental in developing their patented serti mysterieux or 'mystery' setting.
