Anonymous sale ('The Property of a Lady'), Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 3 May 1999, lot 185.

Although of Dutch origin, Pieter Christoffel Wonder travelled to Germany between 1802 and 1804, and was to study at the Dusseldorf Academy. He later moved to London, where he exhibited works at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution. Upon his eventual return to Holland, Wonder established himself in Amsterdam and was elected as a member of the Academy. While he was known to have executed some portrait commissions of large familial groups, it is as a painter of genre scenes - such as the present example - for which he is most appreciated.
