Pierre Mathurin Petraud trained as a pupil of Rodrigue Perriere. He was an active painter in the Bordeaux region, but also travelled extensively throughout the Middle East and Asia Minor. The present painting depicts a scene from the Caucasus Campaign of 1734-35 - the last major military operation during the Ottoman–Persian War of 1730-1735.
