The panel is uncradled, flat, and stable. The paint surface is clean with a clear varnish. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a streaky varnish, underneath which small, scattered spots and fine lines of retouching are visible scattered in the sky and in the tops of the trees, as well as a handful of pinprick spots scattered in the buildings and the figures. The painting is in overall good condition.

The Van Blarenberghe were a large family of painters based in Lille. Louis-Nicolas is best known for his battle scenes (painted during the years of the war of Succession in Spain) and village scenes such as the present work. The Van Blarenberghe specialised in miniatures, and this format was often used to decorate the top of oval boxes.
