Jean-François Huë studied painting with Claude-Joseph Vernet, who had a strong influence on his works. Huë continued the series of French ports initiated by his master, a project which involved depicting all the ports in the country with topographical accuracy.
Other works for which he is renowned are historical and battle paintings, notably some representing Napoleonic victories and Italianate landscapes in the style of Claude Lorrain, such as the present work.
