The canvas is lined, and the paint surface is clean with a clear varnish. There is a very slight degree of wear in the darker pigments of the background and on his jacket. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an opaque streaky varnish, underneath which there is a network of craquelure which comprises fine lines in the background and along the margins. There is retouching along a repaired horizontal damage on the left side of his red cravat, approx. 3.5 cm. long. Retouching is also visible in a further repaired damage below this in the white of his cravat, approx 1 x 2 cm., and to two further small spots to the right of this. There are a handful of more concentrated retouchings in his shoulder on the right, as well as to the right side of his hair and on his left temple approx. 0.5 cm. long. His face appears to be better preserved, with only very fine lines of scattered retouching. None of these impede the legibility of the image, which appears fresh and ready to hang.

Carel Wautier was a Flemish Baroque painter who settled in Brussels from around 1643 with his sister Michaelina, also a highly-regarded artist in her own right. This portrait, thought to be by a follower of Carel, depicts a gentleman of evident status. The sitter dons a fur-trimmed overcoat, in addition to an embroidered white cravat.
