James Hinks & Son developed the “Patent Duplex Lamp” in 1864 which incorporated two wicks instead of the usual one, allowing their lamps to burn twice as brightly. Aesthetics were just as important to the firm as technical innovation and their lamp designs were constantly drawing inspiration from the vanguard of European fashion.
