STACKELBERG, OTTO MAGNUS VON
Costumes et usages des peuples de la Grèce moderne. Rome: [no publisher], 1825
FIRST EDITION, folio (358 x 250mm.), engraved title, 30 hand-coloured engraved plates, nineteenth-century roan-backed boards, title with biro inscription on recto and inkstamp on verso, binding rubbed
A GOOD CLEAN COPY OF THE RARE FIRST EDITION PRINTED BY STACKELBERG HIMSELF IN ROME. Pirated lithographed versions of the plates appeared soon afterwards in Italy, England and France.
These plates of costumes represent Stackelberg's first published work on Greece, where he travelled during 1810-1814. He was in Athens with Byron, and travelled and worked with Cockerell, Haller von Hallerstein, Gropius, Linckh and Foster in excavating various archaeological sites, especially Bassae.
