Le Normant travelled in Egypt with Champollion in 1828. In 1829 he took part in the scientific expedition to the Morea, and again visited Greece in 1841 and 1859, where he died of fever in Athens.
The plates in these volumes are as follows: vol.1 - 113 plates (comprising A-D, no.1-100, plus 9 bis plates); vol.2 - 139 (of 140) plates (comprising no.1-118, lacking no.62, plus 22 bis plates); vol.3 - 112 plates (no.1-101, plus 11 bis plates. Pl.83 and 84 are on one sheet); vol.4 - 103 plates (no.1-100, plus 3 bis plates).
