Man Ray scholar Wendy A. Grossman notes that this photograph was used as the cover of the catalogue for the 1926 inaugural exhibition of the Galerie Surréaliste titled Tableaux de Man Ray et objects de îles. The installation, which opened at midnight on March 26, featured Man Ray's photographs alongside more than 60 Indonesian and Pacific Islander sculptures. The Indonesian sculpture featured here was part of André Breton's collection and was displayed in the gallery window during the exhibition.
