JEAN ANTOINE WATTEAU

Valenciennes 1684 - 1721 Nogent-sur-Marne

TWO STUDIES OF ELEGANT MEN, ONE STANDING, THE OTHER KNEELING

Red chalk;

illegibly inscribed over three lines in red chalk, lower right

6 ⅝ by 6 ½ in.; 173 by 164 mm

Laid down onto an additional sheet of paper, which has in turn been window mounted to a modern card backing. There is very minor toning to the sheet and some small light brown foxing to the upper centre. There is a small old crease to the lower left corner. There is some very minor rubbing to the feet of the right hand figure. The drawing remains in otherwise very good condition throughout with the image strong and the red chalk fresh and vibrant. Sold in an elaborate giltwood frame.
