HUBERT ROBERT | VIEW OF A ROMAN BATH WITH FIGURES IN THE FOREGROUND
Paris 1733 - 1808
VIEW OF A ROMAN BATH WITH FIGURES IN THE FOREGROUND
oil on canvas, unlined
6¼ by 8¾ in.; 15.8 by 22 cm.
The canvas is unlined. There is some craqueleure but it is not bothersome; the surface is flat and stable. The paint layer remains thick and vibrant, particularly in the lighter areas like the water and in the light that shines in from the right. The varnish is clear and bright. Under ultraviolet light one can see small, delicate retouching to strengthen the darker areas of the painting, particularly in the upper ceiling and in the shadows of the columns at left. It is not visibly to the naked eye. The painting is in excellent condition overall. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
