Description

JAMES II

DOCUMENT SIGNED ("JAMES R") AT THE HEAD,

instructing Lord Chancellor George Jeffreys to appoint John Holt, Ambrose Phillips, William Rawlinson, Christopher Milton, John Powell, and five other individuals as Serjeants-at-law, one parchment membrane, docketed, 10 February 1686

A MAJOR SERIES OF JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS BY JAMES II. The office of Serjeant-at-law was held by senior barristers, and several of these men would go on to fill the highest ranks of the judiciary. It was an ancient office that stretched back to the Norman period and was finally abolished in 1880. In April 1686 the appointment of these ten Serjeants was marked by a ceremony at Westminster Hall, a lavish dinner at Serjeants Inn, and a reception at court.
